Next week will see the first of 27 new trams arrive on the Metrolink in Manchester. The first tram is set to be put into service before Christmas once testing and commissioning has been completed. More trams will then follow every 3-4 weeks. The new trams will be a boost to capacity and will help with social distancing.

Manchester Metrolink (branded locally simply as Metrolink) is a tram / light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network has 99 stops along 65 miles (105 km) of standard-gauge track, making it the most extensive light rail system in the United Kingdom.

The system opened in April 1992 with 20 tram stops with routes radiating from Manchester Victoria to Bury and Manchester Piccadilly to Altrincham. Phase 2 extended the network to Eccles with 12 new tram stops and a new interchange at Cornbrook was built in 1999. Phase 3a involved the construction of 36 new stops and new lines to Rochdale via Oldham, Tameside and East Didsbury. The first stops as part of Phase 3a opened in 2011 and the final stop opened in 2014. The Manchester Carriage & Tramway Company commenced operation of the first Manchester route on the 17th May 1877, the system progressively being extended to over 143 miles to Eccles in the west, Crumpsall in the north, Stalybridge in the east and Stockport in the south. 515 tramcars were required to operate the services, which needed 5,520 horses as they only worked for two to three hours at a time.
